To a great 2012
Happy 2012!One year has passed and gone. Before I even set my new year resolution, I thought I should review and recap what I have experienced in 2011, granted that I didn’t blog much last year.
1) Personal
Work. I have turned registrar since Dec 2010, which means I have completed one year of AST training. While the learning curve is steep, I guess I have not succumbed to it and in fact, have gotten much used to this kind of work-life: morning rounds, weekly clinics, journal club/AST presentations, 4 calls a month. Time was bad initially when I was in the overflow team, dealing with a maximum of 53 patients. Learning wise, a lot is really based on self-learning or learning-on-the-job: u read around the topic/kind of disease u encountered. Department wise, I still agree that people in the department are nice, which is one major pull factor in me joining the department. People come and go, and it has indeed been a trying period for the department with so many people (from RP to AC to C leaving). Ok on a lighter note, realistically, the salary is quite substantial as compared to MO pay, which allows me to 1)increase the household allowance for my parents; 2) increase my premium for insurance; 3)spend without having to think thrice (yup, I still think twice).
Relationships. Fortunately or unfortunately, as of date, I am single. There are periods where I almost got into one, but perhaps fate and time really play very important roles. But I do cherish those times, and it has been a fulfilling learning experience for me. As I mentioned, 始终过不了自己那关。
Family. It is still the most important part of my life, although I didn’t put it in the first paragraph, because it has been stable and routine and I am happy to keep it that way. One major breakthrough is we try to go for morning breakfast on every Sunday whenever we are free or not working (tiong bahru market, bukit merah, jurong east and west, sembawang hills, serangoon gardens, old airport road, clementi, zion road, bukit timah, hong lim, etc), followed by visits to various reservoir parks – upper pierce, lower pierce, upper seletar, cck park, etc. More time for family bonding.
Travel. Different traveling experience can be found in separate travel blog, but to sum up:
May- Jun 2011: US – the longest trip ever: 18 days, traveling from NYC to Canada (Nigaras, Montreal, Quebec, Toronto) to Boston, Florida, Washington DC. (part of the trip comprised a 4-day Endocrine conference in Boston)
30-31 July 2011: Kota Kinabalu – a DM conference trip
8-13 Nov 2011: Australia Melbourne, an annual family trip
9-11 Dec 2011: Malacca – travelled with Swee Sen, Lai Kiow, Chee Wee and Chih Ming
Possessions. Got a Ukulele. New insurance policy (sort of an investment savings account – PruVintage). Shopping items from US trip (designer brand stuff). New anti-bedbug bed. New wallet (Bdae present from sis). New wheels (literally wheels, not a new car..)
Bad encounter. It has to be the vehicle breakdown on 5 August. The last day of work before my birthday leave. I was like traveling and hearing weird noises coming from the wheel and before I realize it, the tyre was like punctured and the lining was falling apart. In the end, I drove back to near my house and asked for a tow to service my car, which I changed all my 4 tyres, polished my car and service it at the same time.
2) Local news and world news.
We went through 2 elections in 2011. The general elections on 7 May 2011 – which saw a dramatic change in the political scene when the opposition worker’s party won a GRC Ajunied. There was also a big hoo-ha on young female political personnels joining, and how regular army generals left to become politicians. The presential elections on 27 Aug 2011, where Tony Tan won Tan Cheng Bock by a small margin.
The SMRT breakdown in Dec made it to the top news before the end of 2011 as many were affected by the constant breakdown – people have to smash the window to allow ventilation; commuters have to pave through the dark tunnels. But the happier note is that the circle line was fully functional in the earlier part of the year, and I had a taste of it myself after Christmas when I made a trip to the NEX shopping mall.
The orchard flood happened again during the monsoon season.
World news wise, I believe the death of Osama Bin Laden in May tops all. Others include Japan tsunami and its radioactive leaks, death of Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs, Gadnafi’s death in Libya, Kim Jong II’s death in North Korea, the introduction of ipad, iphone 4s, etc.
3) Entertainment
Stefanie Sun got married on Mother’s day, just weeks after she released her latest album after a 4 years’ hiatus: 是时候, which once again consists of nice songs, the best being 当冬夜渐暖 and 180度. Jay Chow also released his album 惊叹号 on 11/11/11, which I have yet to listen. But the most intriguing one has to be 那些年,我们一起追的女孩。In my opinion, it was one of the best movies that I have watched so far. Although the storyline is simple, it seems to have connected all of us in a special way (those born in the 1980s), especially since the director is of similar age as us. Thank you 九把刀for this lovely show of the year. Nice theme song那些年too, and of course, the OST which is in my CD player in my car now.
According to a website, here’s the top 20 movie internationally:
20. Crazy, Stupid, Love
19. Fright Night
18. Super 8
17. Thor
16. Captain America: The First Avenger
15. Contagion
14. The Adventures Of Tintin
13. Midnight In Paris
12. The Descendants
11. Warrior
10. Bridesmaids
9. X-Men: First Class
8. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
7. The Artist
6. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
5. Rise Of The Apes
4. Hugo
3. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
2. Drive
1. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2
I only watched number 5 though, others I watched include Kungfu Panda 2 in US.
TV show wise, perhaps 巾帼枭雄will secure a place, followed by 行医 and 美乐加油 (with its nice songs).
Okay, shall pen down my resolution later.
Looking forward to a better 2012!
