St Joseph Home
Ever since i have started working till now, i have applied for nursing homes for many patients through ICS (integrated care services). Well these patients are usually admitted (be it minor or major illnesses) --> relatives find it hard to cope --> social workers referred for more detailed social workup --> no other alternatives --> nursing homes. Usually they will need to stay in the hospital for many more days (or weeks) before places are available in these voluntary nursing homes. Case closed.
I got a chance to visit one of these nursing homes to explore how it actually works (after sending so many patients in) - St joseph home. Saw some familiar faces! Well it's in quite a remote piece of land in the west of singapore and i will consider it quite peaceful. Nice ambience and environment to stay in. It would be a nice way to complete the last lapse of life, if their loved ones were there often to keep them company that is.

Compassionate singaporeans
Project superstar—towards finalsWatched the result show yesternite and was rather surprised! While I am glad that Kelly made it to the finals, I was a bit skeptical that Kelvin (the visually handicapped contestant) actually emerged as the male champion rather than junyang. Well I am not anti-Kelvin, in fact I really applaud for his courage and determination to join the competition, come thus far to realize his dream. I was immensely touched when I saw him perform on stage; especially the last song on Wednesday when he sang “Tong Hua” (fairy tale), trying to walk around on stage despite being visually challenged.
But let’s be realistic and rational. To be a real superstar, visual impairment is like a relative contraindication- you can’t have eye contact with the audience, you can’t perform as well on stage, you can’t dance naturally, you can’t communicate effectively with the crowd, though you touch people. Can we really package him up and let him be known in the music industry? I really doubt so. Junyang will fit the bill better.
Whatever it is, the decision is made. I shall support Kelly all the way, like I always do.

TODAY newspapers
i am quite surprised by the queue that gathered behind the TODAY newspaper booth. is TODAY really that sensational that so many people want to grab a free copy of it? is that really a need? can't the time be better spent elsewhere? are these people really so free?
Then again, most people are actually the retired folks.. must really applaud for them for being able to wake up so early for the queue; cos i will rather sleep till 12pm if not for the fact that i need to generate income =(

Presidental elections 2005
just read that we don't need to elect president anymore this year because it will be a walk-over. No eligible competitors - they have rejected the other 3 candidates; so our dear mr nathan will continue to serve for another 6 years.
Which brings me to wonder- is Singapore really so small that we can't find eligible candidates to run for the post. Certainly this person will need a certain calibre but i am sure such people exist; as to whether they are interested in running is another story though.
But of course if there is an election indeed this coming 27 Aug, i guess my vote will be pretty obvious... certainly i will vote for someone i know lah. But competition is always good right? Like what mr nathan has said himself that he is hoping for competitors to show that he really
IS the man who is elected by the people. I reckon he can't fulfill his wish/dream anymore ever again in this lifetime cos i dun think he will run for another 6 years in 2011.
Well the most quoted disadvantage for this walk-over to happen would be no public holiday for all... not going to make any differences to my life since i am on call that day and we don't have off-in-lieu. My only concern is that hopefully people will not turn to hospital and get themselves admitted when they can't go for their one-day break.
Advantages- hassle of going to the polling station and wait for your turn to vote; dun need to change the photos of president and his wife in the banks and other governmental offices.

TTSH full
saw this letter in the FORUM yesterday..
Hospital full so dengue patient turned away
RECENTLY, I contracted dengue fever but was able to confirm it only on the fifth day of my illness.I was running a very high fever. On the first day when I was not feeling well, I visited the Yishun Polyclinic and was given medicine for the fever. The medicine didn't work and, by the second day, I started vomiting. My fever was perpetually at 39.3 deg C.A blood test was done at the polyclinic on the third day but no abnormalities were found. The doctor suspected dengue fever and asked me to return on the fifth day to do another round of blood test.By the fifth day, I was very weak, tired and giddy as I could not eat. After the blood test at the polyclinic, I was referred to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) for immediate admission. From the polyclinic, I took a taxi to TTSH. At the A & E Department, I handed my referral letter to the counter staff, only to have the staff shove a piece of paper at me. Through blurred eyes, I made out the words, 'WE ARE FULL'.The staff then asked me whether I understood and he repeated loudly, 'We are full - go find another hospital!'I was shocked, unable to believe what I heard. Despite being very sick, running a high fever, weak, tired and giddy from low blood pressure and low blood count, I managed to get to the hospital all by myself, only to be told to look for another hospital. My request to him to source for another hospital for me was turned down.We can understand that, at times, hospitals may not have sufficient beds to accommodate patients but the staff should at least help to direct patients to alternative hospitals.Patients who are so sick that they cannot even think straight would welcome such help.
Justina Mak Mei Kuen (Ms)
well, i dun really know how true this account was, after all it is only one-sided. We really need to wait for the reply for TTSH personnel on what actually happened. As far as i know, as long as the hospital is declared full, it will decant all the new patients to all other hospitals within the cluster (ie: NHG; ie AH to be exact). So whether this incident really happened is hard to believe.
I trust the judgement of the A and E doctors. Reasons why this incident/accident happens can be:
1) Perhaps it really does not warrant admission (not all dengues need to be admitted; though from what Justina said she may need to be warded)
2) TTSH is full --> advised to go AH --> pt refused. Usually transport should be and will be arranged, so i dun really understand why Justina was not provided the transport.
3) TTSH is full --> advised to wait for vacancies --> pt refused.
Then again, i must really criticise TTSH for being always full. Is it really full? cos from what i understand from my colleagues, when class C ward is full, it may not mean that class B1 or B2 is full, so by right they can lodge in wards of other classes first.
Next, they always overflow the "typical" cases to other hospitals:
1) patients who cannot move and cannot protest (sometimes known as "prawns")
2) patients from IMH, nursing homes, destitute homes, homes for the aged, moral welfare homes, etc etc.
3) patients with no relatives
4) patients too difficult to manage, eg: unspecified giddiness for investigation, altered mental status..
TTSH should open more wards seriously. And if you really overflow patients, please also overflow the on-call doctors and nurses

sung by Lin Junjie. not a new song, but like it a lot after listening to it! The song of the month!
Now we cannot download mp3 already, so a bit difficult to find it online. Anyway here's the
link to a flash clip that somebody has created.

back to work (soon...)
Sighz.. Days when you are not working seem to pass by real fast.. my break is coming to an end; but i guess it's a nice break free from work - dun have to wake up early; dun have to do ward rounds; no plugs/bloods/social updates - aka talking to relatives/discharges! And i think i deserve it since my last leave in end April.

Currently the "in" programme on my to-watch list. Something similar to the concept of Singapore idol, where contestants will compete against one another and the fittest (or the most popular with the most number of die-hard fans and votes) will survive and move on to the next stage, and the less popular ones will have to be eliminated.
I have been watching this show as early as when there were 24 contestants and now left with 6 (as of today). And my fav - Kelly and Junyang. I am rooting for them to win and they are real good believe me! hope i wun be disappointed...
